SOLO RECITAL - KIM HUNTER (NZ)
In this recital I will be presenting the first movement of Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra by Henri Tomasi and Sequenza IXb by Luciano Berio. Presenting the works of Tomasi and Berio together shows two very different sides to performance; the romantic and lyrical voice of the concerto soloist and the measured and almost medical sterility of serialism. Where melodies in Tomasi's Concerto are constantly passed between soloist and accompaniment, Berio leaves the audience and performer to absorb the silence of the room, often unsure when they will be next at the mercy of the dynamic range of the performer.
Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Kim Hunter is a graduate of Te Koki New Zealand School of Music where she studied under Simon Brew. From 2015 to 2018 she served as a Leading Aircraftman in the Royal New Zealand Airforce Band. She has also toured with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
In July 2017 Kim attended the European University of Saxophone in Gap where she worked alongside many talented young saxophonists from around the world. She intends to return to Europe to pursue Masters studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in September under Joshua Hyde.
